hi
so we jumped off the face of the planet. earth. now we are back. at least i am. eric still floating, like the guy pushed off odyssey by that mad computer, HAL. IBM. not true. anyway. what has happened you might ask. not much. i am working on new material. eric got a tape machine. you will probably be hearing something from it soon.

this is a little something i made today, thought it was kind of neat. a singular harmony through rhythm. implied through amplititude.

see you,
sean.

andras-squareroot partnership.

hello.
so you may know that eric and i are smitten with squareroot records.
since we started we always wanted to do something like this. now we are. trevor edmonds (conifer rock) has released show me some heart, a brilliant little piece of work. dan streeting (cantilever) also has put out a little single ep thang, mina. also brilliant. click on the titles and give a listen. try it out. free music will never hurt you. it will only help your life get better.

this is a new thing we are trying here. their ep's are availble in two places, their site and ours. some of our things will be availble on their site in the next few days. this will be fun.

just being partners. stop making a big deal about it.
were just shaking hands, being friends.
"no way did that just happen, folks."

10/24/2007.
hello everyone.
over the weekend, eric and i played a show, and after the last song i told everyone two things. one, that they lived in a great country and they all should donate to the unicef box, and two, they they should grab our latest disc, called Loop I. It was free and most people did grab one. hopefully they enjoyed the handmade ethos to them. yes.
and now it is up for download on our site. click through to the shorelines area, available at various points on the page and click. it will download perfectly. remember, every single release is for free download on shorelines. go for it!

for those unaware, eric and i have been running our little miracle baby, andras for a full year now. actually over a year now. anyway, thats why this exists. one track from every release. but instead of just letting each track be, we did a little to each one.
...and now i will talk about what each track is.

1. andras. our first track, release, and really our first foray into improvisation. we grabbed a little chunk of the 12 or so minutes that makes it all up and messed with it a bit. not too much. just enough to make it different.

2. fiveguitars fivedrums. our second release. recorded a few months after andras. in december i think. it sounds cold. brrrrrr..r.r.r. these are two of our favorite sections. most other peoples too, i reckon.

3. 1. this track is from my first solo ep in 3 years, eem eim. this came out last year. it was recorded in my living room, where kim was gracious to put up with my musical racket for a day. i love this track. sometimes im amazed it came out of me. i once used this song in a project at work. my boss called it the "scary song".

4. harmonik. this too was recorded now where a giant bookshelf resides. kim sat a few feet away as eric and i made this ludicrous racket. it was 23 minutes when first released. now its 5. what happened!?!? can you tell?

5. 4. this is from be'ase. i really like the way this reconstituted version came out. reminds me of a tiny orchestra. the size of your thumb.

6. what did you see. eric and i recorded a guitar improvisation disc over the summer. it came out really good. great wake up music. this version was slowed and pitch corrected.

7. flight translation. from new germany. i recorded the synthesizer in a bathtub in bad mergentheim, germany. the sound was so great! the sounds were from a sushi restaurant in some airport far away. you can hear me clear my throat. now thats fidelity!

8. finna. recorded in a forest in northern michigan, on my families parcel. kim sat there reading a book, on the side of a hill, while i was wanking away on my sg in the middle of a bloody forest. mics in trees. long extension cords. amps buzzing louder than the blowing leaves. hopefully i remember that for the rest of my life.

9. inter-um discussions and modal springs. this was on one of the latest things out on andras, a nice morning in atomic spring. this track on the ep has a atypical vocal track, here, that is removed, leaving the musical shell.

10. loop l. why the album is named this. actually loop l is a big bubble that surrounds most galaxies and one day bursts. scary. anyway, this didnt appear on the release, tapes tape to tapes. maybe it should of. i was trying to keep it under 11 minutes. this would of pushed it over. i needed to loose something. so, here it is now.

11. conet jets. ahh, a b-side., at last! this was based from a little sketch i made a few years ago called annena. i took a bunch of samples of my voice, just glissandi notes, and played them on a keyboard. it came out spooky. i finally tried it again, this time with a mellotron and an accompanying synthesizer. then, i sang on it. on tape. then looped it through to a tube amp. fancy. you deserve that fanciness.

well. thats it. hopefully you enjoyed the little compendium. it was a lot of fun, hard work to put together something in time for our little shin dig. thanks for reading.

oh..
p.s. friday. something cool is going to happen. check back.

10/23/2007.
hi all
thanks for the big spike in hits. its gone through the roof, respectively.
its probably due to the show we played on saturday. it was so much fun.
thanks to everyone who watched and participated. it would of been boring without you all. hope everyone is enjoying the downloads, which seem quite popular at the moment. check back at the end of the week for a nice surprise.

10/17/2007.
just updating a few odds and sods. i shaved.
on monday, kim and i were invited to a private screening of wes anderson's new film, the darjeeling limited. it was a wonderful film. go see it. after the viewing, the director and one of the stars did a brief q and a. it was a privileged hipsters dream, as you could tell by the amount of tight pants, bad tattoos, expensive cell phones seen whilst in line. the odor of natural deodorants permeated my brain, making be blind in one eye (right) for less than an hour.
tonight, kim and i will be seeing one of america's treasures, wilco. possibly the best american band of all time. yes. all time. as time goes on this will become more evident. anyway, they have enough press, and us not enough, so i will stop talking about them.
for all interested. i will be playing a nice little end of summer/whatever party at the conifer rock/ spectral mornings house in grand rapids, on saturday. it should be a nice little set, my first time playing live, solo in almost 3 years i think. since the old t.c./marquette days. should be interesting... eek! i will be assisted integrally by trevor and hopefully others that have a penchant for waving tambourines and other weapons against music. i have a thing to give to some that come too. the tracklisting is being finalized tonight hopefully.
did you know that someone made an album of buck owens songs all on a moog modular? ala bach/carlos connection...

the monotony and tragedy of running a label.

hello. lately i have been thinking. since the announcement from radiohead releasing their new excellent record via the internet, my dynamics have changed. thinking alot more about where our place is in the universe. andras that is. from the beginning we have been a internet label. our physical records dont carry much merit compared to ones bought in stores. i think that is due to the idea of many be given away for free, in the 21st century. ten years ago, if you went to a show and a band gave you their last 4 records for free, your head would pop off. i dont even think the content matters. its the feeling of being cared for by a stranger. however, due to the saturation of artists on the internet, they have facilitated apathy in music listeners. very little is a fresh, new idea. as cool as it is to download a record in a matter of seconds, for free, i dont think people care enough about it as a piece of art. i feel like we are kind of relegated to this distribution model. the idea of making records in a physical form is great, but they cost money. and since the inception of andras we have made about 25 dollars. we have been open now for over a year. a majority of that was from one friend that insisted on paying for 4 of our records. i have a feeling that that friend either felt ripped off or felt good about those records having some value to him, instead of being relegated to coffee coasters. either way, people value you if they have spent their time or wages. the thing is, in this world of "free art" how do get people to care about you enough to spend resources on you? im not sure anyone has figured it out yet. radiohead has done something cool, but it only works if people know about you. im sure that every musician on the earth has someone else out there that would love their work, but how do they find out about you? how do you care about something that you dont know exists?
i like our overall position in the world, a small label, that caters to only us. we have our good friends and the occasional stranger visit us. it just concerns me that sooner than later, big bands are adopting a similar strategy, so we will be thought of as passe'. this has probably come off as the ramblings of a madman.....ehhh

tapes tape to tape. (weekend in review)

so this weekend has been quiet nice. very relaxing. i started off each day by waking up at the crack of dawn to nice books and coffee. i swear if everyone woke up like that, there would be no wars. only smarter people. maybe. it seems the release of our new page, "shorelines" has gone over well. over 10 downloads so far. which i am happy with. i am working on a few new tracks and will be uploaded to the shorlines area, probably in a few days. its what i like to call a y.p.. instead of ep, yp. just like 2 songs at 2 minutes. or 20 songs at 20 seconds. basically, its music i want to make thats not long enough to warrent a physical release. for instance, the one i am working on right now is called "tapes tape to tape", and you guessed it, its recorded to... tape! ok.. anyway, look for this newy when we reach a quarter of a hundred downloads. here are some pics.

20th anniversary soundtrack

you know, it was about a year ago that eric and i decided to start a label, put out some records, and play some shows. so in late august we put up our website, released fiveguitars, andras, harmonik, and eem eim, and play two shows. one of the shows was in bay city (where we inadvertently closed the festival with one bolt of lightning which worked brilliantly with the crescendo of our last song) and the other in our new home town of ann arbor, that was in a downtown park. thinking about all thats happened within andras and out has been interesting. it seems like its been 3 or 4 years. anyway, i thought i would be self absorbed for a few moments, sorry. heres this.

the last track from my latest ep. download.

a few things in life are unexpected. weekend in review.

hihi. sean here. this weekend, kim and i went up state to attend a funeral for a family friend, mike gow, a great human being. i really miss him. he was a real artist, a writer. when in college he gave me great advice on writing, as he was a professor. anyway. he will be missed. along with the memorial, i headed over to where i played my first solo concert, at schenburg bandshell in lankberry, drummond island.... maybe thats not true....
goodday.

p.s. track is from new unreleased ep, a nice morning in atomic spring.

1003 of time for that. weekend in review.

hihi. this was quite the weekend. kim and i assisted in erics girlfriend in a move. wowy. moving couches has never been so much fun. i also attended a nice soirée at my friend chuck's on friday night. we all stayed up late and made musics on the porch starting at 2 am. we played a few fleetwood mac songs and camper van beethoven. on cello... great fun. eric and i are planning on starting the recording process this week hopefully. good grief. only 3 years too late. ok. i worked a bit more on this new ep of mine. its close to being done. one more day. its the one of the bbc samples idea. who knows what will happen to it. i guess it is my first "concept album", because it follows a fictional story throughout. for it being all doom and gloom there are some pretty textures and neat beats. everything but the samples was made in our apartment. hopefully we fool some people.

weekend in review.

so this weekend started off quite nice with me finally finishing my latest guitar project, a 1963 hofner verithin, it was meant to knock gibson to their knees, but it didnt, because this is a jazz guitar, and the gibson 335 isnt. last word. later, saturday, kim and i made little stamps out of soapstone, which is quite maleable. turned out quite good. went to dinner with sarah and eric to a fancy restaurant called "eve". it was quite the atmosphere. the pictures provided below are of the latter events. this, of course, was all "business" and was charged on the andras mastercard. thank god.......

i was just staring at our gerbils. who were in their respective rolly balls.
one, nelsy, was getting stuck between a thick carpet and a wire, frantically trying to control the unwieldy plastic sphere. i said to myself, mentally,
"nelsy, go to the kitchen, where you will have no issues."
she stopped trying to get unstuck, and looked at me. then rolled effortlessly over the carpet and slowly headed for the kitchen. before reaching her mental destination, she turned and stared straight at me for a creepy amount of time, then went in to the kitchen.

that was quick.
henry o. wankwinkler from kling klang, germany has correctly identified the falsity. he has now won one of our beloved prize-packs.
we're feeling generous, so i won't give it away just yet. all i can say is, pack your suits for norway.

in other news, in addition to the other projects, which, day-by-day are amassing into a virtual cornocopia of rube goldberg-esque aural delights, of which we cannot wait to stimulate your ears with, we will finally be aiming to record the proper debut album we have been so keen on finishing, but due to said 'other projects' and international travel that takes up most of our time, it has been shelved to date. some of you will no doubt already be familiar with a few of these, which have reached a status one might cautiously label as "fan-faves".
so there's another bun in the oven.

Norsk rikskringkasting

hi all.
there is one lie told in this post. which one is it? let me know.

working on three new projects.
one. utilizing samples from an 1984 bbc show about fallout. that one is called a "nice morning in atomic spring". expect it to be 4-6 tracks. also for it to be out in a limited pressing within a few weeks. very fun indeed.

two. this second project will be constructed of all shortwave radio noises. sampled, stretched, squashed, all the fun stuff. this may have to wait until winter due to the nights being longer, hence, the ionosphere will act more orderly. propagation muthafucka. fact.

three. the old nameless band with chuck sipperley, allison stanley, and damon tutunjian, and i are going be back on-line after a summer hiatus. allison went to chicago, and damon went to copenhagen to record with the popular band mew. after everyone gets settled again, we will commence to lay down the improv once again. i cant wait.

oh, then there are the remixes for square root's cantilever. ohh sexy....

maybe these will be strictly available from the site. maybe we will put both on a 7 inch. who knows.

so in other updates, we now get 600 hits a week from the internet community. thats pretty good in my book. until i asked my co-worker how much is blog gets. 5000. a day. so tell yr friends. lets beat a blogger at his own game.

by the end of the month we should have some stickers with all applicable information on them. ohhhhh. also we will be getting a total lot of cd wallets. so expect new andras materials to be really fancy. compared to the old jewel cases.

november 2nd. 8:30 pm. trondheim, norway. be there.

~sean.

Nature Done.

Hii
Sean here.
As posted previously, i have been recording a new disc called Nature.
The tracks of nature revolve around informal natural harmonics, basically things i have heard while outside. I then tried to remember them spontaneously and play them while outside. I did this all with the intention of not being entirely accurate. i do not have the memory or the pitch to memorize a bird call or the notes of wind through trees. i just did what i thought was musically pleasing.

the tracks.

emin.
this track starts with a looped trumpet part, detuned, 2 octaves up. when i originally recorded the part, i thought it would be great as a emulation of a bird call. the sample then is phased through various little chrome boxes. It ends like most of my tracks do with dull crescendo fade out.

finna
finna was supposed to act in the phasing pattern of crickets. in one, out the other, over and over. again, this track features the usual guitar looping and swell "thang" i do often. the track is slowly torn apart by the destabilizing the bitrate to a 44 to an 8 pattern.

leaves
this track started at night while sitting out on a porch in traverse city, michigan. my parents live in a valley, surround by ridges of trees. and late at night the wind can blow through the trees at such a slow speed it almost sounds like moaning. i have noticed this since i was a little kid, kind of freaked out on summer nights. anyway, the track is musically centered around an ARP 2600. more phasing between two different rhythms.

un terra
terra was done on an old organ in wyoming michigan. in fact, this is the only thing that wasnt recorded in the forest. it is a definite tone cluster in three pronounced sections. It reminds me of those times at night in forests when you dont know where you are.

pronoun
you, they, and we. so this track is another night inspired sound. the source material is of guitar looped that slowly changes in and out of time. it reminds me of the distinct rhythm to trees in wind. in where if there are 2, they can kind of play off each other. but in a forest, it is almost like a deaf rhythm section. it also has this kind of lumbering vibraphone effect that i rather enjoy.

náttúran
this is the last track on the album. as in the last one off ep, its the longest. as with other track on Nature, it is sampled guitar. there is alot more phasing in this as well with the same sample, therefore you have the sound overlapping at different intervals. originally nature wasnt going to have this on it, i thought was a little long winded, but after listening to it a bit more i thought i worked as well or better than some of the other ideas. there are some nice nature noises at end of this to.

total time: 43.38.

anyway, im quite happy with the production. i am now, with the closing of this chapter, going to continue demoing track for my solo ep. hope to have it done by the end of the year.maybe.
thanks

02/07/2007.
wyoming sessions and nature.

hihi. sean here.
so, this last weekend i travelled to wyoming michigan for a break from the eastern michigan world. while there, i recorded quite a bit of music made with friends, dan streeting and trevor edmonds both of spectral mornings.
it was quite a bit of fun and we might release a bit of it as apart of a one-off series that weve been doing lately. keep your eyes peeled.

also, i am pleased to announce that i am beginning work on my next disc, called nature.
i am going into the "studio", known as the forest in traverse city, michigan to begin tracking, starting tomorrow for a "session" lasting 5 days.

the impetus of nature is harmonics. harmonics are very rich sounds, many which can be created in nature, wether it be bird noises or wind through trees, nature is harmonically rich. hence the name. anyway, the plan is to go out there and set up my usual "toy field" and "jam" away. i have quite a few ideas jotted down so lets hope for the best.

also, there should be a good show happening at jacobs well, in traverse city michigan on saturday, july 7th. if your in town, check it out. victor! fix the sun.
eric and i should be there.

thanks

sean.

18/06/2007.
its official.
check back here in a few for some films to go along with the songs on new germany.

These recordings were created during the week of june 11th, 2007, while traveling to and around Southern Germany. All sounds, other than one minute guitar part (recorded in 2003) and the prepared piano samples in "let out the bought air" (recorded in 2004) were recorded through the low fidelity internal microphone on my powerbook. Synthesis was provided via software emulation of an 1970's ARP 2600 Modular Synthesizer. The music was all composed in an improvisational manner, along with tracking and mastering. The songs length vary between under a minute to twenty. I enjoyed the crackles and pops of the distorted recording processes, even if some were unintentional, it gives it an atmosphere of realism that non studio techniques garner. I feel that the depth and space of these very rough digital recordings assists in the visualization of my journey. I hope you enjoy.

new germany.

sleep. recorded in bad mergentheim, germany.
recorded in the early morning of June 14th in a hotel lobby. a japanese tourist snapped a picture of me while arranging this particular part of a longer improvisation string. He then waved at me. The hotel employees found this to be quite troublesome, seeing that making racket on a grand piano in a hotel lobby at 6am was not satisfactory behavior. There were two grand pianos on the hotel grounds, one in the lobby. while the other, was in an outdoor gazebo, uncovered, with timpani's resting accordingly.

let out the bought air. recorded in detroit, michigan. additional samples recorded in marquette, michigan
The field recordings were recorded in a sushi restaurant near a gate with a departing plane on June 11th. the music was created utilizing programming software, with samples created specifically for this piece. i gave myself the constraint of finishing this song before i got on the plane bound for germany. i succeeded just in time, just as the gates opened.

flight translation. recorded in bad mergentheim, germany.
This was recorded in a hotel room in Bad Mergentheim, Germany, which is close to Boxberg, Germany. As random as it sounds, it had a loose structure, ideas from listening to early musique concrete recordings while on planes.

my brother. recorded in frankfurt, germany. additional sample recorded in traverse city, michigan.
My Brother probably is the most rhythmically calculated piece. it is structured from a delayed guitar idea i recorded via tape in 2003. This was slowed and chopped up to gives a strange meter to it. i then composed, one at a time the components of audible rhythm. Utilizing phasing between the guitar and the percussion, illustrates the minimality of the means.

osaka gates (f sharp in terminals). recorded in detroit, michigan and frankfurt, germany.
This was a short piece, written for one note, oscillating in timbre, but not in pitch. The gate was split between two planes, one departing to Osaka, with the other departing for Nagoya.

for mies. recorded in bad mergentheim, germany.
This was apart of the same improvisation as sleep, the first track. It was mixed utilizing matching samples that were pitch caclulated, 7 to 14 steps above the original. the resonating is a feature of that effect. The "Mies" in question is that of Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, The well known architect and interior designer, famous for his "barcelona" chair and IBM Building, in Chicago.

bad mergentheim. recorded in bad mergentheim, germany.
The final track, Bad Mergentheim, represents sounds slowed down to a fraction of their original speed. the samples stem from field recordings of landing in Frankfurt to talking with colleagues at a baggage claim. due to the ambient nature of the stagnated samples, i added reverb for a proper streaming effect. the end was composed utilizing a random sequencer, altered from an original setting on the ARP 2600.
I thought at the time of mixing that this high, dissonate note would be a good way to end this piece, and later, the e.p. as a whole.

running time: 34.16

new germany und.

hi
i have a new little goodie to bring forth to you all.
its a little quick ep i made in the last few days while on a trip to germany.

i have put 2 tracks up for the time being. right click below.

flight translation. 59 sec
.

my brother. 3min 39 sec.

here is the proposed artwork, if you feel so inclined.

i am also in the planning stages of recording my solo album.
im shooting for about 7-9 songs.

hope you are well.

the way i feel you now.

so, eric and i had a little fun last night. 2 guitars, trumpet and vibraphone set. a 1932 musser. yes.
i recently won the lottery and have been going mad, buying all the vintage instruments i have been able to get my hands on. im waiting on the 1963.
im goal is to have one instrument from every year of history...
that is all.

my brother was killed in front of me by a wolf at age 7.

did you know that?

20/05/2007.

Hi there.
so, what has happened since the last time you have been here?
well, eric has finished college. we played a show. next to a wendys. no evidence of this exists.
i have played a show with my friend, chuck sipperley. we played a 30 foot piece of piano wire. evidence of this exists.
also, i am in a new band. we are untitled, and we are good.
in andras news, eric and i recorded a little one off impovisation ep. it may come out later this summer.
we have another planned. also a 12" of the piano wire recording should be released by the end of the summer. its called "wavelength".
thank you for visiting.

12/02/2007. - hihi.

heleos.
eric, kim and i had alot of fun this weekend.
lots of good food, company and music.
there is some documentation of the fun-ness below.
look below to the "sounds" section.
it is apart of my second ep, the national ep. when my solo name used to be responder... some may have this, so dont bother. but it is kind of fun, a blast from the past. its amazing sometimes to look back at what you have done. i was quite proud of this when i did finished it. i put on my jacket and boots and rushed over through the snow to the apartment of spectral mornings to give them their copies. i originally made 30 of these, with the last 10 of the edition having a second disc of my first ep, the trellis ep. i think they are all gone now. shortly after recording this, eric and i revived a ferret named polo from its academic hibernation, and then i moved to england. when i came back we started recording for the catalog comp on square root records. it was great fun, with eric and i jumping in to this musical world head first. we have tried not to look back. we are having too much fun.
see you.
